Peter Machan, who has an M.A. in Local History, Literature and Cultural Traditions from Sheffield University, is a well-known writer and speaker on subjects of local interest. Prior to his retirement in 2005 he served as headteacher in several city primary schools and subsequently has worked as education officer at South Yorkshire Forest and more recently as visitor and interpretation manager at Sheffield Manor Lodge.

Peter’s recent book ‘Loxley; Wanderings in a Curious Valley’ was written during lockdown. It tells the little-known story of this unique and fascinating part of the city, its history of agriculture and industry that have left a heritage of ancient cruck barns, water mills and ganister mines as well as stories of lords of the hunt and a mysterious castle as well as the most disastrous flood of Victorian England.
