For our second lecture of the season, we are on “home territory,” learning more about Sheffield’s cutlery heritage through a look at three lesser-known cutlery companies. They all made outstanding items to satisfy the world’s demand for high quality cutlery, flatware and holloware.
Here’s what our speaker Nick Duggan says about himself: “I worked as a teacher and lecturer in Sheffield, becoming the advisor for Vocational Education to the Council. On retirement l started to volunteer at The Hawley Collection, based at Kelham Island. l have been successful with two lottery projects – Name on a Knife Blade and Sheffield Treasures. l love Sheffield and celebrating what it made and still makes.”
Nick is bringing some fascinating exhibits from his extensive personal collection which will be a joy to behold. You will have the opportunity to view and handle the goods.
We will also learn about the people and work places they occupied (including another Portland Works in Sheffield!) There was an adopted son who became rich and lived in Abbeydale Hall, the first company to provide separate washing facilities for female staff, and the first to become a limited liability company.
We anticipate a full house for this lecture so book your tickets now. HTTPs://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/3-excellent-sheffield-cutlery-manufacturers-tickets-1299060076659?aff=oddtdtcreator
