Sheffield the Home of Modern Football
Sat in the heart of the original Footballing district with at least five of the iconic grounds in the story of modern football just a toe end kicks in every direct it saw the birth of the modern game. Bramall Lane, Highfields, Sheaf, East hill and Olive Grove. The people in the picture probably went to these venues and shouted for their teams not knowing what they had started.
Home of Football historians Steve Wood and John Stocks will give their presentation first seen at the International Football History conference in Cardiff this year. It explains how Sheffield’s unique early association football culture evolved from cricket and folk football to play a decisive role in creating the rules based modern game. We will share new research and discoveries as we continue to work towards transforming the city into a living museum of world football history, which will highlight a bid for UNESCO world heritage status as a site of unique intangible cultural value.
